“Do Business Till I Come”
Luke 19: 11 – 27
Dr. Aubrey McGann
The Triumphal Entry is near. Jesus is about to offer Himself to the nation of Israel as their King. The crowds were excited because they saw the miracles He performed and they began to believe that He was the promised Messiah who would deliver them from Roman occupation. Luke 19: 11 “He spoke another parable, because He was near Jerusalem and because they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately.”
He told a parable to inform them of what was soon to take place, but they did not seem to get the message.
Luke 24: 21. “… we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel”. Acts 1: 6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”
1. THE REJECTION OF THE MESSIAH
Luke 19: 12, 14 He said: “A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return. … But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We will not have this man to reign over us.’
A. THE PREDICTION OF THE PROPHETS
Luke 18: 31 – 34 Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished. For He will be delivered to the Gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon. They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.” But they understood none of these things; this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know the things which were spoken.
B. THE PRAISES OF THE PEOPLE
Luke 19: 36 – 38 And as He went, many spread their clothes on the road. Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, 38 saying: “‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the LORD!’ Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
C. THE PLOT OF THE PRIESTS
Luke 19: 47, 48 “…He was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him, and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to hear Him.”
2. THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE SERVANTS
A. THE TREASURES WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN
Luke 19: 12, 13 “A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return. So he called ten of his servants, delivered to them ten minas…”
1 Thessalonians 2: 4 “… we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel”
2 Corinthians 4: 7 “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.”
1 Corinthians 4: 2 “… it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.”
B. THE TASK WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN
Luke 19: 13 “Do business…”’
Matthew 28: 18 – 20 Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore[a] and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
C. THE TIME WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN
Luke 19: 13b “… till I come.”
Matthew 24: 44 “Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
Romans 13: 11, 12 “…do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand.”
3. THE RETURN OF THE KING
A. THE REIGN OF THE SOVEREIGN KING
Luke 19: 15 “… he returned, having received the kingdom”
Jeremiah 23: 5 “Behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD, “ That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; a King shall reign and prosper, and execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.”
Philippians 2: 9 – 11 “Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
”Revelation 11: 15 “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!”
B. THE REWARDS OF THE SOVEREIGN KING
Luke 19: 15 – 19 “… he then commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. Then came the first, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten minas.’ And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant; because you were faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.’ And the second came, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned five minas.’ Likewise he said to him, ‘You also be over five cities.’
1 Corinthians 3: 8, 14 “… each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor… if anyone’s work which he has built … endures, he will receive a reward.”
Matthew 16: 27 “For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.”
Revelation 22: 12 “Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.”
C. THE RETRIBUTION OF THE SOVEREIGN KING
Luke 19: 27 “… bring here those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, and slay them
before me.’”
Revelation 20: 15 “…whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”
